Docs For Schools is announcing a new, albeit small, program for teens who are keen on watching documentary films.

  • Not to make films, but to view and discuss…..the Docs For Schools’ DOC CLUB.

Here is the plan….once a month, we would like to welcome DOC CLUB members to the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema for a screening and discussion.

  • It will not just be the film, popcorn and drink, but we will bring guests, such as Hot Docs Programmers and other industry folks to discuss the film.
  • We also might be able to go on a tour or two of doc related places.
  • The timing of these screenings and events will be either after school or early evening, and will be part of the regular programming at the cinema.

The early framework will be fairly loose.  We would like to bring 10 students together for this first year.

  • Only restriction is that student needs to be in high school, and able to travel to the Bathurst subway post school, early evening for the events at the cinema.  (506 Bloor St W).
  • We would have our first screening in December, followed by film discussion, and then discuss what is possible and to learn more about what the students would like us to consider for the remaining months.

We will begin small, but feel this could grow into something quite special.  Here’s the process:

  • Have students e-mail a 250 word paragraph explaining why they like documentary films.  This can include references to specific films, comparison to how/why they like docs vs feature films, how/what they have learned from docs, etc.  Please do not send a list of docs viewed.  Rather, tell us why you like the medium…  including some examples in the mix.
  • Include name, age, grade and school
  • Include teacher name and e-mail for reference
  • Email to (Lesley Sparks) lsparks@hotdocs.ca by 4:00pm, Monday, November 14
  • Students accepted will be notified by email on Monday, November 21 by 5:00pm
