The Science department is committed to fostering an interest in science, developing proficiency in scientific concepts and increasing critical thinking skills in students. Our teachers have a passion for their subject area and aim to provide students with a rich learning experience. To make learning authentic for all students, our department is committed to embracing diverse ideas, perspectives, and knowledge systems so all students feel engaged, valued and included. A variety of teaching methods and activities are used to inspire all types of learners such as design challenges, hands-on activities, experimentation, demonstrations, labs, dissection, and technology as well as in-class instruction. Real life applications and societal issues are incorporated in the curriculum and viewed through a scientific lens.
Science at an arts school?
The Science department offers a large selection of courses that meet all curriculum requirements for an OSSD. We offer the Enhanced Pathways model Grade 9 Science course, SNC1W, and in Grade 10 we offer the Academic Science course. Our popular optional senior course offerings include all the science courses required as prerequisites for any university or college program, including:

- Grade 12 Biology (SBI4U1)
- Grade 11 Chemistry (SCH3U1)
- Grade 12 Chemistry (SCH4U1)
- Grade 11 Physics (SPH3U1)
- Grade 12 Physics (SPH4U1)
- Grade 12 Science (SNC4M1)
In previous years, we have offered experiential learning opportunities such as field trips to the Toronto Zoo and Ontario Science Centre. Students interested in science and math can participate in enrichment opportunities such as the HOSA Club for students interested in becoming Future Health Professionals, the STEM Club and the Grade 12 University of Waterloo Chemistry Contest. In addition, to support students who find science challenging, all science teachers offer extra help and further support exists through our school’s peer tutor program.
In Grade 9 Science, students will explore STEM skills and careers, biology, chemistry, physics, and astronomy. This provides a foundation for Grade 10 Science and allows students to determine which three areas of scientific study they may choose to pursue in Grades 11 and 12. In fact, many ESA grads pursue science and math degrees and have successful careers in healthcare, engineering, business, kinesiology, and computer programming. The science teachers are all committed to supporting student success and achievement through engaging in-class instruction, ensuring extra help is available, and providing student support.
