Girls Rugby Team 2nd in Toronto – goes to Ontario Finals

The ESA Girls Rugby team wrapped up a very successful season last week by playing in the Ontario Finals at Fletcher’s Fields in Markham. The girls finished 7th in the province capping a great season with an overall record of 17 wins and 6 losses. Over the course of nearly two months, the girls came second in our very own ESA tournament, first in the Agincourt tournament (5-0), and first in our pool in the City of Toronto qualifying tournament. In the City of Toronto Tier 1 Championships, the Eagles advanced to the finals only to lose to Mowat Collegiate in a close game. To win silver medals in the City of Toronto is still a great accomplishment.

The team was made up of the following players: captain and hooker Olivia Janus, un petit tigre and a convert kicker par excellence, scrum half Alice Santilli, an all-round great player, Loulie McMaster, a force on the run and a determined tackler, Emma Cullen-Shaw, pure acceleration and speed, Jenna Ladd, another speedster and tough as nails, Carly Hominuik and Elise Weber, accomplished props in the scrum, back-ups Abby Lalonde, Olivia Bowe ,Emily Lobb, Emily Chambers and Sophie Sutcliffe who filled in admirably in injury situations and at other times, and fearless injured starters Dragona Javovina and Caitlin Ladd.

The girls proved to be quick studies as this is only the second season for Girls Rugby at ESA. To have advanced as far as they did is testimony to their determination and improved play. Coaches Mr. Hilborn and Ms. Hutton would like to thank the girls for a great season and wish the graduating players success in their future endeavours.
